Fellow South Africa, our beloved Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, the founding president of our democratic nation, has departed.
Mandela has been in and out of hospital since 2011 struggling with a ling infection and other ailments.
He was born in 1918 in the eastern part of South Africa.
He joined the African National Congress when he was a university student.
For the next 50 years, he campaigned against the country's apartheid system, a policy of racial segregation that discriminated against non-white groups.
In May 1994, Mandela became the country's first black president.
He worked for reconciliation between whites and black and oversaw the creation of a constitution that enshrined racial equality.
He retired from active politics in 1999, but continued to mediate in conflicts in other countries in Africa.
