Once every 20 years, the shrine's sanctuaries are rebuilt and its treasures are restored. Keepers of the shrine staged a completion ritual on Saturday at the new main sanctuary.
During the "Kotsuki-sai" completion ritual, priests dressed in white robes proceed to the new "shaden" main building. Traditionally-prepared dishes are served to 70 priests, who enjoy a ceremonial drink of sake rice wine at the conclusion of the meal. The priests then proceed to the new main sanctuary. Using wooden canes, they thump the bases of the pillars,as a symbol of reinforcement. The ceremony is kept secret. All camera crews and media are told to leave. The new main sanctuary was built right next to the old structure. On the left is the new "shaden."
Once every two decades, the sanctuaries are completely rebuilt. Their treasures are restored and the guardian deities are transferred.
There are various theories why this ritual is observed. Some say it's to preserve the dignity of the sanctuaries. Others say it's to pass on the techniques of the shrine builders. 【restore】復元する 元通りに新しく作り直す
